Things to do in Ortahisar

Ortahisar sits a few kilometres from both Göreme and Ürgüp, and works well as a quieter base for anyone who wants easy access to the valleys without the crowds of the two bigger villages.

It is known locally for its cave storage rooms, natural cellars cut into the rock that keep a steady cool temperature and are still used to store fruit and vegetables, apples in particular, sometimes for months at a time. Meskendir Valley and White Valley both start within walking distance, so you can head out on foot rather than drive.

What Ortahisar does not have is much in the way of restaurants or evening options: expect a handful of places to eat rather than the range you get in Ürgüp or Göreme, which suits travellers after a calm base more than a lively one.
