Things to do in Çavuşin

Çavuşin is a lived-in village on the Göreme-Avanos road, about 5 minutes' drive from Göreme, which makes it an easy add-on to a Paşabağ and Zelve morning rather than a destination on its own.

The main draw is the Church of St John the Baptist, cut into the cliff face and reckoned among the oldest rock-hewn churches in the region; some frescoes survive but access can be restricted or the church closed outright depending on conservation work under way, so treat a visit as a possibility rather than a certainty.

Below and around it, cave houses line the rock, a number still occupied, others converted into small cafés with terraces facing the valley. There is no ticket booth queue here and no fixed opening hours to plan around, which suits a short stop of 20 to 30 minutes between other sights.
