Things to do at Mount Erciyes
Mount Erciyes is a dormant stratovolcano that rises to 3,864 m south of Kayseri, and on a clear day it is visible from most of Cappadocia's valleys, including Göreme roughly 1 h 15 away by road. It matters here for what it is made of, not just its height: repeated eruptions, alongside those of Hasan Dağı further west, buried the region under thick layers of volcanic ash that compressed into soft tuff.
Wind and water have spent millions of years carving that tuff into the cone-shaped fairy chimneys around Göreme, Uçhisar and Paşabağ, while harder basalt caps left standing on top explain why some pillars keep their balancing boulders and others do not.
Its lower slopes carry a working ski development, but the mountain itself is best read as the source rock of the landscape rather than a day-trip activity.
