Things to do in Ihlara Valley
Ihlara Valley is a 14 km canyon roughly 1 h 15 from Göreme, but the practical walking section runs about 4 km between the main staircase near Ihlara village, close to 380 steps down, and the hamlet of Belisırma, where rock-cut churches with faded frescoes are set into the canyon walls. It gets sold locally as a quick, easy stroll on the Green Tour alongside the underground cities. It is not that.
The initial descent is steep, and covering the full stretch to Belisırma with stops at the churches takes several hours, not a lap around a viewpoint. What it does offer, unlike Göreme's fairy chimney valleys, is shade and a stream at the canyon floor, so it stays walkable through summer heat when the surface trails do not.
Bring proper shoes for the steps and uneven riverside path, and budget the time rather than treating it as a photo stop on the way to somewhere else.
