Things to do in Niğde

Niğde is a provincial town about 1 hour 15 minutes south of Göreme, on the road that carries traffic out of Cappadocia towards the Mediterranean coast.

Most travellers see it from a car window rather than as a stop in its own right: it works as a waypoint if you are heading south, or as the natural anchor for a day that also takes in the Gümüşler monastery a few kilometres away and the Soğanlı valley roughly 45 minutes further on. There is little reason to route here from Göreme for a standalone excursion.

The town itself has a modest Seljuk-era core, but it is the combination with Gümüşler and Soğanlı, or Niğde's position on the way to Mersin and Adana, that makes the stop worthwhile rather than the town's own sights.
