Things to do in Göreme

Göreme is the base most visitors use, not a sight in itself: a village of cave hotels stacked into the rock, with the otogar and the main street forming the hub for buses, tour agencies and restaurants. From here it is 10 minutes to Uçhisar, 15 to Ürgüp or Avanos, and around 45 to the underground city at Derinkuyu. 5 hours before sunrise.

A cave room in the centre runs roughly EUR 40 to 90 a night; quieter options sit a short uphill walk from the main street. The open-air museum and the surrounding valleys each need separate planning, since Göreme itself is mainly for sleeping, eating and organising the days around it.
